Recruiting Nurses

RN's are the largest group of health care providers in the country. Improved technology and a greater focus on cost-effectiveness has placed nurses in the position of primary care providers. Resulting from this, there has been a large increase of new job opportunites and demand for nurses. According to a report from the United States General Accounting Office, enrollments in registered nursing programs have declined over the past five years, and has not been able to compensate for the number of nurses who are retiring or leaving the industry.

In other words, the difficulties in retaining and recruiting nurses has increased dramatically. With suppy shortages on the horizon, health care employers need to be prepared to offer generous employment packages and benefits.

Some interesting facts from the New Mexico Center for Nursing Excellence & American Association of Colleges of Nursing, courtesy of http://www.abqtrib.com

  • 55 percent of nurses reported their intention to retire between 2011 and 2020.
  • 85 percent of hospital CEOs reported having a shortage of registered nurses in 2005.
  • 8.5 percent was the reported vacancy rate for nurses in 2004, which translates to about 118,000 positions.
  • By 2014 more than 1.2 million new and replacement nurses will be needed, accounting for two-fifths of all new jobs in the health care sector.
